Housing Accommodations

Students seeking on-campus housing accommodations related to a disability or medical condition may apply through Disability Support Services (DSS). DSS will review each accommodation request and work with the Housing Services team to implement reasonable accommodations if approved. Examples of housing accommodations may include placement near an elevator, low-floor housing, visual or bed shaker alarms, or approval of an animal-related housing accommodation.

Housing Accommodation Request Process

Step #1: Any student who wishes to request a housing accommodation should complete the DSS accommodation request form

Step #2: Submit supportive documentation specific to the housing accommodation request. Please note specific documentation requirements:

  • Documentation must include information regarding the student’s disability or medical condition and current functional impact as it relates to the housing environment.
  • The provider may include recommendations for accommodation.
  • Documentation must be provided from a licensed, treating physician or health provider who can provide clarification regarding the disability-related need for the accommodation.
    • The treating provider must specialize in a field consistent with the diagnosis, as well as be familiar with the student and their disability.
    • Documentation must be provided on official letterhead and include the provider’s name, title/professional credentials, address, telephone number, email address, licensure information, signature, and date of the report.
    • Provider may not be a family member/relative.

Step #3: Meet with DSS staff for a housing accommodation intake meeting to discuss submitted materials, disability-related needs, and possible next steps in the accommodation review process.

Please note:

  • Approval of academic accommodations does not automatically establish eligibility for housing accommodations, as housing requests are reviewed separately based on disability-related housing needs.
  • DSS works closely with Housing Services to ensure the housing accommodation process aligns with the general housing application and placement processes, so please be sure to review and adhere to any deadlines they provide.
  • While the university works to implement approved housing accommodations whenever feasible, residential inventory and timing considerations may affect immediate availability. In some situations, students may wish to explore alternative housing arrangements that better meet their individual needs.

Timing of Request/Availability

  • Students are encouraged to submit requests as early as possible prior to housing lottery, selection, and other deadlines.
  • Requests submitted after housing deadlines or after the semester begins may experience delays in implementation.
  • Housing availability and room inventory may affect the timing of approved accommodations.
  • In some cases, approved accommodations may require placement on a waitlist until appropriate housing becomes available.
