How do I drop the lowest grade automatically?

As an instructor, you can indicate to Moodle that of certain graded items grouped together in a gradebook category, you would like the lowest of the graded items to be dropped. You can indicate how many (lowest two grades, for instance). Be aware that if you have not entered zeroes for ungraded assignments, Moodle will ignore those by default, instead dropping the lowest GRADED item(s).

  1. Login to Moodle and enter the course in which you drop the item(s).
  2. From the main page of the course, click on the ‘Edit’ gear wheel in the upper right corner by the course name.
  3. From the drop-down menu that appears, click on the “Gradebook setup” option.
  4. From the “Gradebook setup” page, locate the category in which the items are located.
    1. If necessary, create a gradebook category first.
    2. Then move the appropriate items into the category.
  5. Click on the gradebook category’s related ‘Edit’ drop menu in the ‘Actions’ column. Choose the ‘Edit settings’ option.
  6. On the ‘Grade item’ screen, in the first section, locate the ‘Drop the lowest’ setting. Enter the number of items you wish the system to drop.
  7. Scroll down and save.
