Haskins Keynote Speaker and Book Contributor

Dr. Deborah Haskins, Counseling Program Director and Assistant Professor of Counseling, was an invited keynote speaker at the Nova Scotia Association of Black Social Workers International Conference in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, September 24-27, 2014 . Her keynote address titled, “Gambling and African People: Facing the Challenges.” was a precursor to her 90-minute follow-up workshop titled, “Gambling and African People:  Challenges and Opportunities for Change,” and 2-hour community awareness workshop for community stakeholders titled, “Gambling and African People:  From Awareness to Action”. The presentations were part of ABSW’s “Out of the Shadows” focus on mental health, addictions, and gambling in the African Nova Scotia community.

Dr. Haskins has also been invited to contribute a chapter to the book, “Afrocentric Social Work:  Best Practices in Working with African Communities in the Diaspora” based on some of the ABSW conference presentations. The anticipated publication is Fall 2015.
