Mary (Severne) “Sev” Schnugg

Mary Severne “Sev” Schnugg
March 16, 1924 – August 9, 2021
Resident of Orinda, CA

Sev, 97, passed peacefully at her home with all her children surrounding her. She was born in St. Paul, MN, the daughter of Mortimer and Severne Hayden, and sister of Skip Hayden. Sev graduated from the University of Minnesota, where she met Frank, her husband of 65 years, while he was attending medical school. They married in 1948, and in 1953 they moved their growing family to Orinda, where they raised their children.

It was always Sev’s vision to have a large family. She is survived by her 13 children, 38 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren. Children include: Steve (Cathy) Schnugg, Mary (Michael Dues) Brown, Peter (Carol) Schnugg, Susie (Ray) Taylor, Nancy (Craig) Schlatter, Ann (Mike) Ralph, Jane (Jeff) Allen, Patty (Ted) Trenkwalder, Sarah (Mike) Loughlin, John (Meg) Schnugg, Peggy (Carlos) Steffens, Tom Schnugg, and Libby (Dan) Ward.
Sev was, above all, a devoted, proud and loving mother, and a friendly, fun, beautiful woman. Her dedication to family and family values was as strong as her adventuresome and resilient spirit. She loved the beach, where she and Frank built a second home that served for over 40 years as a cherished, joyful gathering place for family weddings, vacations and other celebrations.
Private family services will be held in Bolinas and Stinson Beach. To plant trees in Sev’s memory, please visit our Sympathy Store.
