1987 Class Notes for 2013
Dear Fellow Members of the Class of 1987,
It was great to see so many of you at our 25th Reunion – what a fun weekend. Let’s give a special thank you to Mary McCabe who planned such a great party Saturday night. It has been a while since we have had a Class Scribe and I was happy to hear from so many of you! Keep it up!
Colleen Ryan Mallon was the first to respond. She was sorry to miss Reunion. She lives in Alexandria, VA, near Mount Vernon and has been working in the senior housing field since she left Trinity. She started with an association that provides housing and services for older adults, and has been working in continuing care retirement communities. Currently she is the corporate director of marketing for Goodwin House, a non-profit organization serving more than 1,000 seniors. Married to Charlie Mallon, she has two kids in high school, Meghan (17) a senior and John (15) a freshman.
After graduating from Trinity Kate Moira Ryan received her MFA from Columbia U. and began her career in theater. She currently lives in Brooklyn Heights with her partner of 18 years, Laurie Liss. They have a son, a well-read sports fiend named Timothy Elliott (13), who will be attending the Indian Mountain School, a coed junior boarding school, next year where he will be able to ski and golf to his heart’s content. Kate’s work has been published and produced around the world. Kate co-hosts Hatched by 2 Chicks a radio show on Sirius OUT Q with her long-time collaborator Judy Gold. In the spring their latest endeavor, The Judy Show – My Life as a Sitcom, will open at the Geffen Playhouse in LA. Kate serves on the Trinity Alumnae Board with Jane Farrell DeCoursey and loves giving back to the next generation of leaders, thinkers and mothers.
Maria Cecilia Sanchez-Martinod lives in Ecuador, has seven children as well as dogs, fish, parakeets and turtles. She works at a private high school as a secondary chief counselor. Jean-Jacques (22) studies cinematography at U. of N. Carolina School of Arts, Jean-Paul studies political science/economics at UVA and Jean-Michel (18) wants to pursue a career in the music business. The four youngest: Camila (15), Madeleine (12), Dominique (11) and Amelie (2) keep her busy at home. She keeps in touch with Lillyana Arenas-Najaezadeh, Robin Pinder-Herndon and Brenda Singer-Fantauzzi.
Mary Coe lives in Sydney, Australia. She’s been married to Pete (who she met during her sophomore year in Oxford) for 25 years and they have two children, Ian (17) and Emma (14). Mary is still running her own book and database indexing business, which she started 20 years ago. Pete is a paramedic with the New South Wales Ambulance Service. She probably won’t come to Reunions (though she would certainly win for farthest distance traveled), but any Trinity alumnae visiting Australia are welcome to look her up – she would be happy to show you around Sydney! Mary Jane Curran lives in Portland, OR, with her daughter Carolina (6) whom she adopted as a baby from Guatemala. She works from home which, “is a constant challenge for all the obvious reasons: interruptions, a slippery slope of a schedule, well-meaning friends who stop by, and increasingly – but only during work hours! – obsessive housekeeping.” She and Carolina spend one week every summer on the SC coast and another on the Oregon coast, and Carolina never seems to notice the precipitous drop in water temperature, much less let it affect her play. They have gone camping a few times this summer, and she has found that incredibly restorative. Carolina’s plan for a recent weekend was to make a bunch of cakes, cut some dahlias and sell the cakes and bouquets at a stand for five cents each. “It’s fun but sometimes alarming to live with someone who has absolutely no money sense.” Victoria “Vickie” Rocha has made her swear that she would attend the 30th Reunion, so we will see her then!
Susan Crimmins loved seeing everyone at Reunion. She is living in Medfield, MA, with Tom, and their children Jack (8) and Lauren (6) and their rescue mutt, Buster. She works at State Street Global Advisors for now and recently moved from the project management office to operations. Like many of us, she is busy with sports and other kid activities, but loving life.
Great to hear from Corinna Kleinstiver Velez, whom I lost track of over the years. She and her family recently moved to Sarasota after four years in Bogota and reports, “The kids are in school and I am busy unpacking the remaining boxes. Marco is a senior this year at IMG (and getting used to living at home again!). Hannah is a junior at the local high school and trying to navigate all that big American high schools have to offer (or stay away from!) and Jaime is in seventh grade (middle school…enough said!). Other than the obvious school stuff, I am busy driving everyone around to crew (Hannah) or soccer (Jaime) or music lessons (Jaime) or volunteer work (Hannah). Mario has been on the road more than usual and, unfortunately, missed both packing and unpacking for the move, as well as all the back to school activities for all three schools. Needless to say, I get some very nice dinners and lots of flowers to compensate!”
Sarah Dalton Vassiliou is living in DC with her husband, George, and their two children, Olivia (second grade) and Dimitri (third grade). She loves teaching at their school every morning. Both kids play both piano and tennis and take Greek lessons. Olivia is also doing gymnastics and ballet while Dimitri loves soccer, baseball and choir. Sarah recently chaired a big auction at their school, and organizes many PTA fundraisers, chess club and dance/movement classes. Sarah and her family are continuing to love DC and the rich culture it provides them. She is an avid power walker and still loves tennis. She and George took to the kids to Disney and John’s Island this summer. They are looking forward to visiting Greece to see George’s family and to sail (they own a Greek sailing charter business). She will gather with her extended family in January to celebrate her mom’s 85th birthday!
Sheila Broderick Martin is still living in Boonville with Eric, Brendan (12) and Caroline (10), and like many of us, feels like a bus driver transporting her kids to their various activities (were we this busy growing up?). She is still teaching 11th and 12th grade social studies. The longer she teaches the more she enjoys the students and the subject matter of US history and government. However, she is worried that her school district may not survive in this faltering economy.
Colette Durst writes, “After graduating from AU Washington College of Law, I worked for several years at intellectual property law firms in DC and Alexandria. In 2007, I had the opportunity to take a job as assistant general counsel for Wal-Mart Stores in Bentonville, Arkansas. After two years with Wal-Mart, I was fortunate to receive a job offer with Tyco International in its Boca Raton, FL office as senior IP counsel.” Colette grew up in FL so the job was a great opportunity to move closer to family. Tyco is an international company which means most of her meetings and work are completed early in the afternoon so she can spend time watching her sons play after school sports and take them to all of their other activities. Chris (12) is an avid baseball player and Devin (15) is an avid tennis planner (just like his mom!). Devin just started high school at a local prep school in Delray Beach and Chris is at St. Jude School, a local Catholic school. Both the boys love FL since they can play sports throughout the entire year. Colette was sorry to miss Reunion. Condolences to you, Colette, on the recent loss of your mother.
Anne Grifo Zimmerman’s oldest son, Harry, is a freshman at the U. of Arizona. He is on the track and field team and majoring in business. Her daughter Madeline will be attending Harvard in the fall where she was recruited for track and field. Her youngest, Jack, is a busy eighth grader. He plays lacrosse and football and has been an altar server since third grade. She recently got together for dinner with Jane Farrell DeCoursey and Mary Lou LaSala Pagano, and husbands, and had a lot of laughs.
I still live in Larchmont with Rob and our two sons Will (10) and Teddy (9). Like everyone else, I do a lot of volunteer work and spend lots of time in the car going to tennis, baseball, lacrosse, soccer, etc. I see Katie Loughman Mitchell often. She is living in Darien with Jim, Abigail (15), Jamie (13) and Teddy (11).
