Welcome to the Safe Exam Browser (SEB) Resources page, your guide to preparing for exams that require SEB. This page provides download links, setup instructions, troubleshooting tips, and guidance on what to expect before and during an SEB exam. Use this resource to make sure you’re ready to take your exams smoothly and securely.
What Is Safe Exam Browser (SEB)?
Safe Exam Browser (SEB) is a free, secure testing application that temporarily locks your computer into an exam mode. Once SEB is active, you can only access your online exam and any resources your instructor has approved. This helps maintain academic integrity and creates a fair testing environment for all students.
Download & Setup SEB
Students must use the latest version of SEB to ensure compatibility and reliability. Instructors do not need to download and install SEB.
- Windows: Download SEB for Windows
- macOS: Download SEB for macOS
- Setup: Safe Exam Browser Instructions
(Note: SEB is not compatible with Chromebooks. iPads are supported only if your exam template allows it, but Moodle Support recommends using a PC or MAC)
Using SEB
- Plan to take your SEB quiz using a PC or Mac computer. Devices such as Chromebooks and iPads are not recommended, as they are either incompatible or have repeatedly caused issues during SEB exams.
- Always start exams using a web browser (Google Chrome recommended). Do not use the OpenLMS mobile app, as SEB will not launch correctly.
- SEB locks your screen and keyboard shortcuts. You cannot switch to other programs or open new browser windows.
- Stay connected to a stable internet connection and keep your device plugged in.
- When you finish, select Submit or Quit SEB to exit the exam environment.
Troubleshooting Tips
| Issue | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Exam doesn’t open in SEB | Browser or link issue | Reinstall SEB, allow “safeexambrowser://” links, and try again. |
| SEB won’t launch the quiz | Old configuration file | Re-download the latest .seb file from your course. |
| SEB says “unsupported version” | Outdated software | Update your operating system and reinstall SEB. |
| Screen freezes or app closes | Background programs or low power | Close all other apps, plug in your device, and restart SEB. |
| Accessibility needs | Need for assistive technology | Contact your instructor before the exam for approved accommodations. |
