Lakia “Coach K” Meriwether who’s not only a native Washingtonian but also an Alum of Trinity Washington University is entering her first year as Head Coach for Trinity’s Volleyball team. Although this is her first season coaching this team, she is not a stranger to the coaching world as she comes with over 5 years of coaching experience.

Being a four sports athlete since the 3rd grade playing various sports like tennis, volleyball, basketball and softball, Coach K has had the pleasure of coaching all 4 sports as well at various levels. Throughout her coaching career she’s met a lot of interesting people, one being Sasha Obama during her time coaching volleyball at the National Cathedral School here in Washington DC. Another highlight of her coaching career is when she was an assistant coach for Drew Freeman girls basketball team where they won their first championship while also having an undefeated record.

Before coaching, Coach K was an exceptional cellist and student tri- athlete at Eastern Senior High School where she won various awards ranging from rookie of the year to MVP. Of course it was no different when she arrived at Trinity University. During her time here she made the Dean’s List all 4 semesters while playing for Trinity’s volleyball, basketball and tennis teams. Not only did she collect academic awards at Trinity, she also received multiple awards in all 3 sports that she played which included rookie of the year, tiger awards, MVP and the athletic directors awards her senior year.

Outside of sports Coach K was a program and site coordinator for a non-profit organization called Playworks. There she was able to positively impact the lives of hundreds of students throughout the DC area through her teaching of social and emotional learning using games. Coach K was so good at her job that she was chosen to teach the Former President and First Lady Barack & Michelle Obama how to play a popular Playworks game called Ro Sham Bo(rock paper scissors) relay, which of course was a highlight of her career.
