What is an academic session (term 1/day/weekly)?

TERM/Day/Weekly/Monthly/ALTWK

Term I: The first 8-weeks of the Fall or Spring semester. Class meets once a week in the evening for three and a half hours or at the weekend for four hours. SPS, BADM, and NHP classes. Term 1 in the summer meets for 5-weeks only and so for longer each class.

Term II: The last 8-weeks of the Fall or Spring semester. Class meets once a week in the evening for three and a half hours or at the weekend for four hours. SPS, BADM, and NHP classes. Term 2 in the summer meets for 5-weeks only and so for longer each class.

Day: Full semester classes that meet one, two, or three times per week during daytime hours. Most Day classes meet twice a week for a total of two and a half-hours each week for a three-credit class. However, there are exceptions: seminar day classes meet once a week; some classes do meet in the evenings; and classes that are not three credits such as math and science classes, follow a different pattern. All CAS classes are Day classes.

Weekly: Full semester classes that meet once a week for two and half hours (3-hours if scheduled on a Monday or Saturday). EDU, NHP, SPS, and BGS classes. In the summer, weekly classes meet for 8-weeks only and so for longer each class.

Monthly: Meet one weekend a month (Fri-Sat) during the Fall and Spring semesters only. EDU only.

ALTWK: Meet alternative weekends Fri-Sat eight times a semester during the Fall and Spring semesters only. NHP and BGS only.

Fall/Winter/Spring/May/Summer

Fall semester runs from mid-August through mid-December and incorporates Term 1, Term 2, Day, Weekly, Monthly, and Alt-weekly classes.

Winter session is a shortened semester (historically it has been just one week but in 2021 is three weeks) with select classes from any collegiate unit who wishes to offer a class, most often CAS, SPS, and NHP. For purposes of Financial Aid this may be considered part of a students’ Spring course load.

Spring semester runs from mid-January until mid-May and incorporates Term 1, Term 2, Day, Weekly, Monthly, and ALT-weekly classes.

May session is a shortened semester (typically about three weeks) with select classes from any collegiate unit who wishes to offer a class, most often CAS, SPS, and NHP.

Summer runs from early June through mid-August and incorporates Term 1, Term 2, and Weekly classes (all of which meet less often than their Spring/Fall counterparts).
