Phi Beta Kappa Inducts Twelve Trinity Students into Honor Society
Twelve Trinity students were inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest honor society, at a ceremony on May 7, 2009. Trinity graduate Marguerite Kirst Colston ’89, vice president for constituent relations for the Autism Society of America, gave the keynote address to the new initiates and their guests. Colston, who majored in economics and Latin American studies and was inducted into Trinity’s chapter in her junior year, entitled her remarks “Because the Universe is Random: How Liberal Arts, Faith, and Phi Beta Kappa Can Guide Your Journey through Life.” She told the initiates that “as a Phi Beta Kappan from Trinity, you leave here with tools of faith, of family, of intellectual integrity, and of a love of learning that will serve you in unique and wonderful ways.”
Students inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, who will graduate from Trinity on May 17, 2009, are, from the Class of 2008: Efstathia Maria Kalapothakos (political science) and Vanessa Miranda (communication), and from the Class of 2009: Ijeoma Uchechukwu Arize (biology), Gillian Carol Marie Bryant (history), Allison Marie Dobbs (international affairs), Katrina Louisa Gardner (English), Durkia Danielle Hudson (psychology), Makai Kellogg (history), Tega Okah (biochemistry, biology), Brigid A. Otieno (international affairs), Laura Elizabeth Regester (chemistry) and Elizabeth Louise Zamorski (political science).
Kodilichi Blossom Nwankwo ’09 (biology), who was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in her junior year in 2008, served as the entrance guide for the ceremony.
Phi Beta Kappa
Since 1776, election to Phi Beta Kappa has been recognized as a distinctive honor for those who meet the highest standards of achievement in the study of the liberal arts. The Epsilon Chapter at Trinity, chartered in 1971, annually elects eligible juniors and seniors to membership based on their fulfillment of the requirements established by the Chapter and by Phi Beta Kappa. Members are elected on the basis of scholarly achievement, broad intellectual interests and good character.
