Trinity Launches New Certificates in Education

Certificates in Child Development, Special Education, Designed for Career Advancement and Enhancing the Learning Experience of Youth

Trinity Washington University is offering two new certificate programs that are designed specifically for those who are interested in advancing their careers and enhancing their knowledge in child development and special education.

  • The Child Development Certificate can be completed by taking just six classes, requires the completion of a high school degree, and all 18 credits are fully transferable into Trinity’s associate of arts degree in early childhood education.
  • The Graduate Certificate in Special Education consists of just five classes, requires the completion of a bachelor’s degree, and all 15 credits are fully transferable into Trinity’s master’s degree in special education.
  • Classes for both certificate programs will begin mid-August and will be online for the fall semester.
  • Trinity offers the lowest tuition of any private university in the region: The Child Development certificate is just $195 per credit, and students who are eligible may be awarded Pell grants to cover the costs. The Graduate Certificate in Special Education is just $810 per credit.
  • Trinity provides one-on-one advising and academic support services to assist students in the successful completion of their courses and certificates.

“There’s a great need in early childhood education and in K-12 schools for professionals who are well prepared to meet the wide range of educational needs of our youth,” said Dr. Karen Santos Rogers, Associate Dean of Education and Associate Professor of Education. “These Trinity certificates in child development and special education can advance students’ careers in rewarding fields and put them several steps closer to earning a degree. The Trinity faculty who are teaching the certificate programs have extensive experience in these fields and are committed to providing students with knowledge and skills that can be applied immediately in the classroom.”

Child Development Certificate

This certificate prepares students to work with children from birth until age eight. Coursework cover how child-care centers, schools and families interact to influence development and learning, the foundations of how children learn, strategies to help young children acquire language and literacy skills, and techniques for observing and assessing student growth.

All of the six courses are recognized at the Gold Standard level with the Council for Professional Recognition to prepare students to take the Child Development Associate qualification exam. Trinity is the only college or university in the D.C. region to hold this Gold Standard level recognition. All 18 credits are fully transferable into Trinity’s associate of arts degree in early childhood education.

The Child Development certificate classes are taught by Trinity faculty and instructors with extensive experience in the early childhood field and designed to provide students with content immediately applicable to their work with young children. Course assignments and activities are designed to build a student’s professional College Development Associate portfolio.

Graduate Certificate in Special Education

This certificate prepares students to work with a wide range of diverse needs. Trinity’s program focuses on evidence-based instructional strategies and data-driven best practices to enhance the skills needed to help those with varying social and learning abilities in today’s inclusive classrooms. Educators learn to develop effective behavioral interventions, differentiate instruction, and provide appropriate accommodations. Coursework explores the intersecting relationships of school, home, and community and how they can work together to ensure all students meet their full potential.

The Graduate Certificate in Special Education consists of just five classes and all 15 credits are fully transferable into Trinity’s master’s degree in special education.

All courses are taught by Trinity faculty with extensive experience in a variety of special education areas and designed to provide students with the content knowledge and skills needed to enhance education opportunities for students with special needs. Trinity faculty teach foundational knowledge in an applied format, integrating students’ work and life experiences with the course information.

Trinity offers the lowest tuition of any private university in the region: The Graduate Certificate in Special Education is just $810 per credit.

Prospective students must have completed a bachelor’s degree to apply to the Graduate Certificate in Special Education program. Prospective applicants who have completed a master’s degree are also encouraged to apply.
