Larry Savoy 'Sowers' Seed' Lecture Inspiring Lives of Service

Trinity Washington University is pleased to welcome Larry Savoy, M.S.A. ’07, from 4:30-5:30 on Thursday, March 27, 2014, in Social Hall where he will deliver an inspiring ‘Sowers’ Seed’ lecture on service and social justice in education.

Established by Kelly Snider Dunn ’64 and her family, the Sowers’ Seed program highlights alums who have incorporated into their lives the traditions of community service and social justice that are central to the Trinity experience and reflect the Catholic tradition that influences Trinity’s mission. These alums are invited to come to campus to share their stories with Trinity students, in the hope that their stories will inspire new generations to consider community service, either as a volunteer or as a career.

Savoy, Principal of Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School in Takoma Park, Maryland, is completing his twentieth year as a Catholic Educator spending the last seventeen years with the Archdiocese of Washington. He attended Temple University in Philadelphia, PA where he received his Bachelor of Art Degree in Theater with a concentration in Education from Temple University. He also completed a three-year tenure with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia while serving the children of St. Vincent’s Children’s Home.

Upon graduating from Temple University in 1997, Larry returned to his alma mater, Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, DC where during his fourteen-year tenure, he served in various roles including Teacher, Assistant Dean of Students, Dean of Students, and Vice Principal. In 2007, he received his Master of Science Degree in Educational Administration from Trinity University in Washington, DC.

During the 2011-2012 school year, Larry was appointed to the position of Principal at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic School in Silver Spring MD. At the end of the school year, St. Michael’s closed and Larry was appointed to his current role as Principal of Don Bosco Cristo Rey.

Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School and Corporate Work Study Program, established in 2007, is the newest high school in the Archdiocese of Washington. It is a unique partnership between the Archdiocese of Washington, the Salesians of Don Bosco and the Cristo Rey Network of Schools, where college-bound students are provided with an excellent educational opportunity, despite having limited financial resources. In addition to their participation in the traditional instructional setting, all students participate in the Corporate Work Study Program where they gain professional work experience and earn money to pay for a portion of their education. In the tradition of the Salesians of Don Bosco, Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School emphasizes the importance of Faith, Family, Future, and Fun in education. Teachers and staff are committed to providing students with a loving and supportive environment, coupled with real-world experiences in order to succeed.

As Principal of Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School, Larry Savoy enjoys the challenges of education, of working with teachers, parents, and students, and the opportunities to make education accessible for all students. He feels especially fortunate to be able to provide opportunities for low-income students who, without the program offered at DBCR, would not be able to afford a Catholic school education. He is an effective instructional and spiritual leader who is dedicated to providing an environment which ensures opportunities for high academic achievement and personal growth for all of his students.

Larry lives with his wife Taryn, who has also received her Master’s from Trinity University, and their three daughters in Bowie, MD where he and his family are parishioners of Ascension Catholic Church.
