Trinity Graduate Jameika Andrews ’10 Crowned 2011 Ms. Wheelchair D.C.

Recent Trinity Washington University graduate Jameika Andrews ’10 of Washington, D.C., has been crowned the 2011 Ms. Wheelchair District of Columbia. Andrews graduated from Trinity in December 2010 with a bachelor of arts in business administration. Andrews graduated one year early from Dunbar Senior High School.  Her future plans include pursuing an MBA and becoming an independent entrepreneur.

During the selection process, Andrews said that she would like to give something back to her city as Ms. Wheelchair District of Columbia: “I make a good representative for people with disabilities, because I have been able to succeed despite the fact that I have a disability.”  As Ms. Wheelchair D.C., Andrews will travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan, in August 2011 to compete nationally with other state titleholders in the annual Ms. Wheelchair America Pageant.  The selection process for Ms. Wheelchair D.C. includes participation in empowerment seminars, the delivery of a platform speech and judged interviews. The Ms. Wheelchair District of Columbia organization is “a sisterhood of dynamic women who are dedicated to promoting disability awareness, education, and empowerment.”  Each year the Ms. Wheelchair District of Columbia organization selects a spokesperson to inform the general public about her life as a person with a disability, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and a platform issue of her choosing.
