Dr. Child Named Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences
President Patricia McGuire announced the appointment of Dr. Elizabeth Child as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. In announcing her appointment, President McGuire noted that “Dr. Child has demonstrated extraordinary leadership talent, strong vision and excellent administrative skill during the three months she has served as our interim dean. Given the many ways in which she has stepped up to this leadership position, I am pleased to Dr. Child’s full appointment. ” She will serve in this position through December 31, 2008, after which she will be on sabbatical.
“Dr. Child is exceptionally well qualified to lead the College of Arts and Sciences,” said President McGuire. A magna cum laude graduate of the University of Virginia, with a double major in English literature and French and a minor in Italian, Child earned her master’s degree in English literature at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, and her Ph.D. in English Literature at the University of Maryland. Dr. Child joined Trinity’s faculty as a visitor in 1999 then onto the tenure track; she was tenured in 2006. Child has been chair of the English program and has served on numerous committees while also teaching a broad range of courses and staying active in scholarly and professional work. Noted President McGuire, “she is well respected by her faculty peers, and will provide strong leadership for the College of Arts and Sciences.”
