Trinity Launches Nursing Program

Beginning in the fall of 2006, Trinity will offer an educational opportunity for registered nurses to continue their professional development. This new nursing program is designed specifically for registered nurses (RNs) holding associate’s degrees to complete their bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). Earning a BSN enhances leadership and management skills and critical thinking skills and increases career mobility. The bachelor’s degree also provides a foundation for graduate studies in nursing.

In addition to enhancing the career options for nurses, Trinity’s RN to BSN degree program is meeting a critical need in the Washington region’s hospital and health care industry. The degree program is being developed with the generous support of two grants from Kaiser-Permanente.

Dr. Sharon Mailey, director of the new nursing program at Trinity, is developing the program to align with the guidelines from the Association of Colleges of Nursing. Dr. Mailey most recently served as associate director for academics in the division of nursing and respiratory therapy at Shenandoah University, and was an associate professor at Marymount University in the School of Health Professions, department of nursing. She has served in both the U.S. Army Reserve and the U.S. Air Force Reserve.

Currently she is professionally active on the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and the American Association of Spinal Cord Injury Nurses. Her recent research includes serving as the project director for a grant from the Department of Health and Human Services on “Bioterrorism €“ Curriculum, Assessment and Practice.” Dr. Mailey earned her Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina from the School of Education, her master of science from UNC, and her bachelor of science in nursing is from Berea College.
