Policy on State-required Examinations

The Praxis I/CORECore, ACT, SAT, and/or GRE or alternate OSSE-approved basic skills exams

Entry into the Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education major, the Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education major, and the Master of Arts in Teaching program requires that students demonstrate basic skills through either:

  • a 3.0 cumulative GPA for entry into BA majors or a 3.0 undergraduate GPA for entry into the MAT program, or
  • passing scores in reading, writing, and mathematics on the Praxis Core exam or any alternative basic skills exam accepted by the District of Columbia Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE).

Students must present official copies of passing exam scores to Trinity. Further information about the Praxis Core, including testing dates and locations, can be obtained at ETS (www.ets.org). Trinity’s school code is RA5796. Note: Assistance with Praxis CORE preparation is offered through the Office of Continuing Education. Preparation courses in Reading/Writing and in Math are offered each semester. .

The Praxis II Subject Examination Tests

Trinity requires that MAT candidates and BA in Early Childhood Education and Elementary Education candidates pass the Praxis Subject Test in their content area prior to student teaching. Passing the Praxis Subject Test is a certification requirement in the District of Columbia and surrounding jurisdictions.

The Praxis II Subject Tests measure subject knowledge as well as general and subject-specific teaching skills. Further information about these tests, including testing dates and locations, can be obtained at ETS. Trinity’s school code is RA5796.

The Praxis Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Test

Trinity does not require teacher education candidates to take the PLT, which assesses key indicators of the beginning educator’s knowledge of topics such as human development, learning processes, instructional processes, diverse learners, educational psychology, and professional issues.  However, the PLT in the appropriate grade level is required for licensure and certification in the District of Columbia.
