Sign Language Interpreter (Contracted) Position Description:

Reporting to the Director of Disability Support Services (DSS), the Sign Language Interpreter facilitates effective communication between staff, faculty, and students/individuals that are deaf and/or hard of hearing at Trinity Washington University, either in the classroom or in other college approved settings.

Interpreter(s) must be available to work daytime in-person schedules for the Spring 2023 semester, including morning and early afternoon course sessions.  The Spring semester is scheduled from 01/23 to 05/05.

Responsibilities and Duties (*Essential Functions)

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the primary job functions herein described.

***Preference will be given to interpreters who have experience signing in STEM and nursing fields and/or classes, such as physics, advanced math, pharmacology, etc.

*Prepares for and interprets during in-person classroom sessions and for as-needed interpreting (i.e., Student Success Center), teacher or advisor conferences, graduation ceremonies, and other school functions) during academic term.

*Works as a team interpreter in classrooms or meetings as requested with assigned interpreting team member.

*Substitutes for other interpreters on an as-needed basis, if available.

*Follows a schedule provided by the Disability Support Services Director for each semester.

Promotes disability awareness and helps the school staff, faculty, and students develop positive attitudes towards disabilities.

Requirements:

Associates degree and documentation of successful interpreting background, such as interpreting certification (or other interpreter credential). Examples include:

  • Certificate in Deaf Interpreting (CDI) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
  • Provisional Deaf Interpreter Credential (PDIC) from Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
  • Credential/score of 3.5+ on the Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA)
  • Other interpreting credential or proof of successful provision of interpreting service for at least 2 years.

Prior experience interpreting in an academic setting strongly preferred.
