Position Overview

The Conway Scholars Nursing Student Academic Success and Retention Specialist is responsible for promoting a positive and successful learning experience for students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program to increase student program completion and ultimate success in passing the NCLEX-RN Next-Gen exam to become licensed as professional nurses.

In collaboration with the Dean, School of Nursing and Health Professions, the Program Director for Baccalaureate in Nursing, and the Student Success Center, the Nursing Student Academic Success and Retention Specialist assists students in developing personal and academic skills needed to successfully complete their baccalaureate nursing degree (BSN) degrees, and prepare for the NCLEX examination. Duties include providing instruction; assisting students in applying theory to clinical practice; collaborating with the Director of Simulation in developing and implementing clinical simulation scenarios; providing one-on-one assistance for students who need support in achieving clinical performance in the clinical setting; coordinating nursing academic support services to achieve identified student outcomes; developing, coordinating, and revising nursing program success activities; and serving as a liaison with the University’s Student Success Center.

The Success and Retention Specialist is dedicated to conducting activities in a manner that promotes student success and lifelong learning.

Qualifications

 

  • Unencumbered DC RN Licensure, or eligibility for license to practice nursing in DC.
  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Doctoral degree preferred
  • A minimum of two years teaching experience
  • Experience in assessment of student learning outcomes and remediation strategies
  • Prior experience in preparing students for NCLEX-RN required
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience with ATI applications preferred
  • Experience with academic education curriculum development
  • Program implementation

 

Specific Job Duties

 

  • Develop and implement innovative programs for Nursing and contextualize learning classes in compliance with content standards. Assist and collaborate in the development and management of comprehensive programming of services designed to increase student retention.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff to coordinate learning needs of students.
  • Collaborate with Program Director, Capstone Course Lead, and Curriculum Committee to assess aggregate academic and standardized test results of nursing students and recommends strategies for improved course and program outcomes.
  • Collaborates with Program Director to organize and facilitate student assessment, success planning, and tutoring.
  • Delivers contextualized learning to various Nursing according to program innovation. Assists in developing and implementing supplemental instructional programs.
  • Meet one-on-one with at-risk students on a regular basis to monitor utilization of success strategies.
  • Coach students in test taking skills and strategies for preparation for all exams, (Course, standardized, exit, and NCLEX-RN NextGen)
  • Analyze relevant student, cohort, and program data to identify gaps in outcomes.
  • Support processes and procedures for promoting instructional quality and applied practice in BSN curriculum.
  • Collaborates with other departments to implement robust bridge programs for retention.
  • Incorporates current nursing program retention initiatives into the nursing programs.
  • Works closely with faculty mentors and advisors and other retention staff to provide students effective learning plans.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
