Changing the Culture: Trinity Hires Head Basketball Coach, Isaiah Johnson
WASHINGTON D.C—The last few weeks for Trinity basketball have been a whirlwind but there was a new feel to the Tiger’s basketball practice Tuesday evening. It marked their first practice under new head coach: Isaiah Johnson.
In just a few practices with Johnson as the head coach, everyone could feel the shift in the Trinity basketball culture already. Coach Johnson looks to be implementing new values into the team like discipline, teamwork, and hard work.
Coach Johnson is a former student athlete and graduate from Syracuse University, he also completed his master’s degree at American University. He is currently an educator at KIPP DC where he coached both the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams to championships.
“I am proud of my student-athletes’ accomplishments; including 3 Division 1 athletic scholarships for varsity girls’ basketball, a middle school boy’s championship, a KIPP DC championship, and an Eastern Regional championship,” Coach Johnson stated. This is his first time running a collegiate program as a head coach. With the assistance of former Trinity tri-sport student-athlete Myesha Green, the season looks extremely promising.
Trinity Athletic Director, Monique McLean was very pleased seeing the coaching duo at practice:
“We are all very excited about our new basketball coaching staff, Coach Johnson and Coach Green bring great energy and discipline to our program. Their coaching styles complement each other, and I am certain they will do their very best to put our team in position to win. The culture shift has been evident since day one and they have a great opportunity to mold a young team and create their own identity for the basketball program.”
The Trinity Tigers will have their first home game today against Hollins University at 6:00 PM. Before the game, Trinity Athletics will pay tribute to former basketball player who passed away, Blessing Hayes.
